Chief Inspector Bryce Mysteries

The books feature Scotland Yard detective Philip Bryce, over a period from 1947 to 1951. An unusual policeman, Bryce qualified as a lawyer before WW2, but then decided to join the Metropolitan Police. After a period in the army – he was awarded a Military Cross for gallantry – he returned to the police, becoming the youngest Detective Chief Inspector in the Metropolitan Police.
Some of the books are set in London. Others are set in towns and villages elsewhere in England – the expertise of Scotland Yard detectives is often sought by provincial police forces.

Bryce’s cases range from murders in great country houses to sordid killings beside railway lines in remote country districts. One book involves the blackmail of prominent people, rather than murder. Another tells the reader almost from the outset who the killer is, and the story is about what he thinks, what he does, and what happens.

One book is composed of two shorter stories, and another of three. The books run in a chronological series, but each is a ‘standalone’.
